Our Program

Music Books

The curriculum for Music and the Brain was designed around a 156 song repertoire. Each piece introduces important concepts while developing musical skills. Three music books have been written for the Music and the Brain program.  The repertoire includes music from around the world across many genres such as folk, classical, jazz and children’s music.  All three books are arranged in one music binder for convenience for teachers teaching multiple grades in a school day.

Book One

Book One was designed with elementary school aged children in mind but is actually appropriate for any beginner.  There are 46 songs in the book and if classes are seen twice weekly it is sometimes possible to complete the book in one academic year.  Book One should be taught sequentially and is in middle C position.  Early songs alternate between right and left hand arrangements and progress to two-handed arrangements.

Book Two

Book Two is usually introduced when the children have had music for at least one year and have completed Book One.  There are 34 songs included that are initially in middle C position and progress to C position.  Some songs from Book One are revisited with two-handed arrangements.  Book two should also be taught sequentially.

Book Three

Book Three was designed to offer more challenging and varied music for students who have finished Books One and Two, and also to provide music that can be taught at any time -- even before completing Books One and Two -- if teachers feel that it fits into other work that they are doing. Unlike Books One and Two that were arranged sequentially, Book Three is presented in alphabetical order. Teachers choose which songs and concepts they want to work on and when. (The songs in Book Three are more difficult to play but there are ways to use them and create lessons that are appropriate even for beginners.)
